Infinite Loop in BOL code!?
Take a look at error handling .. what happens if one of the three cmd.execute within the [Done:] hanlde fails?
It looks to me like we would have an infinite loop! .. am I missing something here?
BOL CODE EXAMPLE:
----------
Dim Cn As New ADODB.Connection
Dim Cmd As New ADODB.Command
' If the ADOTestTable does not exist, go to AdoError.
On Error GoTo AdoError
' Connect using the SQLOLEDB provider.
cn.Provider = "sqloledb"
cn.Properties("Data Source").Value = "MyServerName"
cn.Properties("Initial Catalog").Value = "northwind"
cn.Properties("Integrated Security").Value = "SSPI"
cn.Open
' Set up command object.
Set Cmd.ActiveConnection = Cn
Cmd.CommandText = "DROP TABLE ADOTestTable"
Cmd.CommandType = adCmdText
Cmd.Execute
Done:
Cmd.CommandText = "SET NOCOUNT ON"
Cmd.Execute
Cmd.CommandText = "CREATE TABLE ADOTestTable (id int, name char(100))"
Cmd.Execute
Cmd.CommandText = "INSERT INTO ADOTestTable values(1, 'Jane Doe')"
Cmd.Execute
Cn.Close
Exit Sub
AdoError:
Dim errLoop As Error
Dim strError As String
' Enumerate Errors collection and display properties of
' each Error object.
Set Errs1 = Cn.Errors
For Each errLoop In Errs1
Debug.Print errLoop.SQLState
Debug.Print errLoop.NativeError
Debug.Print errLoop.Description
Next
GoTo Done
End Sub

Fortunately, Microsoft makes everything run as "administrator".|||lack of permission to Insert would cause the same problem .. But it's not just lack of permission that might cause this code to run forever .. for instance a network failure might raise the same problem .. a server failure might also do the same thing .. the point is: Error handling is supposed to be very helpful but in this code it is not. TASK_TYPE
- Code : Char(3), Unique, NotNull, Primary Key
- Description : VarChar(20), , NotNull,

As u can c the idea is simple...
...an assignment has an INDEX as PK, a start date, an end date and other fields;
...an assignment can have one or more tasks; the relationship is 1:N and is identifying (see next point)
...a task has a SUB INDEX inside the assignment; that is the PK is the assigment it belongs to (also a FK) and an index for that assignment
...a task has also a TYPE, which is a FK to the TASK_TYPE table
Consider also that...
...ASSIGNMENT contains > 1 millions rows
...TASK contains < 10 rows for each assignment (so an average of 5 millions rows)
...TASK_TYPE contains < 10 rows
As far as I know SQL-server creates a CLUSTERED INDEX for any PK, that is
ASSIGNMENT (Index)
TASK(Assigment, SubIndex)
TASK_TYPE(Code)
Do I have to add any other NON CLUSTERED INDEX? I would say I should add the following:
TASK(Assignment)
TASK(Type)
But of course TASK(Assignment) is already part of the CLUSTERED INDEX ASSIGNMENT(Assignment, SubIndex), so I shouldn't add it, right?
What about TASK(Type)?
Or maybe there's a completely different solution?
My main problem is due to the fact that TASK has a composite PK wher one field is also a FK.
Any advice is welcome.
thanks a lot :-)what, exactly, is your main problem? you didn't say what it was :)
i don't think you need any additional indexes, since TASK_TYPE should always be handled in memory (but then, i am not a DBA, eh ;))
by the way, it's not a good idea to name a column "index" as this is a reserved word in a lot of languages|||I'd simply like to know how where to put indexes :)|||okay, put an index on task.type
;)|||I would put the index in the database. Someone might need it, and it would be very embarrassing, if you left it at home.
Joking aside, is there a particular query that is giving problems? Remember that excessive indexing can hurt data modification processes.
indexing question
what's the best way to index them: one index that contains all of
those columns, or multiple indexes containing one foreign key column
each. Don't know if this makes a difference, but my foreign keys are
not explicitly defined as such in the schema and most of them are
nullable.I'm not sure what you mean by saying you have foreign
keys but they aren't explicity defined in the schema,
but to answer your specific question, there is no one
right answer for any question of the form "how do I index ... ?"
It all depends on what queries you run against the data.

The size of the table, if you only have at most a few hundred rows on
a table, you probably don't need any indexes as full scans will be
pretty fast. On the other hand have millions of rows and good indexes
will be essential unless you want your application to crawl.
Know you application. You would think if foreign keys are defined they
would need to be indexes, but not necessarily. Say one of your foreign
keys is only used for a report that runs once a month at a weekend.
Sure it will run faster with an applicable index, but do you need it
to? What about the overhead everytime the table is updated, and
needing to rebuild the index on a regular basis.
My approach is to build the obvious ones. If you have a customer table
for instance it's obvious that you need some kind of customer id
index. I would monitor table usage in development and even continue
into production using profiler to establish which would be the most
used indexes. If you just create all the indexes you think you might
need you could end up with 20, 30 or more indexes.
I try to be fairly ruthless with indexes, trying to keep no more than
5 or 6 max on a table. It's not always possible, but the more you add
the larger the space used, the more maint and the more overhead.
Hope this helps
John|||Thanks for the response. To be more specific: it's a very large
product table. It gets read a lot. It doesn't get written to very
often. So SELECT speed is essential. The table is fairly wide
because it contains a number of columns pointing to optional product
specification records in different tables. They are in different
tables because they have largely varying structure. Each is optional,
therefore these spec ID columns are nullable. There are also a few
columns referring to things that are constantly joined on, such as
brand ID's. The majority of queries use brand and other ID's for
inner joins and a number of other queries use left outer joins on the
spec ID columns.
To reiterate my question, I am not sure if it's better to have one
index that includes all of these spec, brand and other such columns,
or if I should have multiple indexes, each of which contains one
column, or something in between?

column), they need to be in the right order to be useful. For instance
if you had a composite index that was made up of three columns,
cust-id, order-no and date in that order. If you had a query that
supplied the cust-id, order-no and date, the query would be very
likely to use the index. A query where you only had the cust-id, might
use the index, depending on the spread of cust-id. If however your
query only knew order-no and date it would not use the index as it did
not have a value for the first column (cust-id).
So in answer, it's would probably not be a good idea to put all of the
columns into one index, it would probably hardly ever use it. It is
more likely that you could create composite indexes of 2 or 3 columns
that may work and cut down on the number of indexes you need, but
again you really need to know your application to be sure.
One thing you can do with large composite indexes, is have 'covering'
indexes. If you have all the data columns that a query requires in an
index, the query can get its data from the index only without going to
the table itself. This can be very fast. Say you have a table with 100
columns in it and you have a query that runs a lot of times a day and
is only interested in three columns in the table. If you create an
index of those three columns, the query can get it's data from the
index without reading the table.
Hope this helps

INDEXTYPE equivalent ?
There is a concept called INDEXTYPE in Oracle, Is there any equivallent for the same in SQL Server ?
Oracle example :
CREATE INDEX index1 ON test_table(col1) INDEXTYPE IS CTXSYS.CONTEXT
What is the SQL Server equivalent query for the above ?
Thanks,
SamI'm not enirely sure as to what exactly indextypes in Oracle are. As far as I know its a more narrow definition of how the column/s in the index could be used in when/like clauses and is build to that. Searches such as when client = 'Kaiowas', like 'Kai%s' or 'K%w%s'. Ms SQLServer does not have this kind of performance tuning as far as I know, perhaps Ms SQLServer depends more on it's internal query-plans.sql

Hi Phil,
Did you try it? Did you check BOL?
CREATE TABLE #temp (PK int NOT NULL,
Col1 char(4) NOT NULL,
Col2 varchar(20) DEFAULT NULL,
PRIMARY KEY (PK), -- creates an index
UNIQUE (Col1) -- creates another index
)
go
-- And here's a third way to create an index
CREATE INDEX tmpind ON #temp (Col2)
go
-- Check if it worked
sp_helpindex #temp
-- Clean up the mess
DROP INDEX #temp.tmpind
go
DROP TABLE #temp
go

Hi Aaron,
In "Results in Text" mode: switch to results pane, hit Ctrl-A to select
all, hit Backspace or Delete key.
In both "Results in Text" and "Results in Grid" mode: switch to query
pane, highlight one or more space characters, hit Ctrl-F5 to execute.

Indexing with null or zero

I don't think this is quite true. A column's nullability (assuming
that is part of the choice here) affects what query plans can be
considered. Also, indexes aside, there can be different and
unexpected results depending on whether NULL or 0 is used.
An example we often see in the newsgroups is
select this, that
from T
where T.parent not in (
select parent
from T_children
)
which returns no rows even when there are T.parent values
not present in the T_children table.
There are other differences less likely to be an issue, like
calculating percentages:
select
T.parent,
sum(case when parent = T_children.parent then 1.00 else 0.00 end) /
count(T_children.parent) as percentage
from T join T_children
on T.parent = T_children.parent
group by T.parent
Unfortunately, while using NULL is probably truer to the principles
of good modeling, using 0 may have some practical advantages, if
the referring column can then be declared as NOT NULL. To maintain
referential integrity via a foreign key constraint, NULL is a better choice,
since 0 requires putting a dummy entry into the referenced table.

There is at least one solution using an indexed column instead of
an indexed view. Functionally, it is much the same, but you might
find it easier to maintain.

But it seems that SQL Server is indexing the whole url and not each part of
it (domain, querystring, etc). So if I have this url
www.onedomain.com/somepage.aspx
And I query 'onedomain' I want to get that url. However I'm not getting it.
I think it's because it is indexing the whole url and not every part of it.
could you tell me how can I workaround this?

It will also work if you upgrade to Windows Server 2003 and you get to take
advantage of using US_English and still can use formsof(inflectional) which
is a function that you lose with the Neutral word breaker.

I'm searching in files in database for "c#" and some pdf files returned
by search are not containing "c#". Opening these PDF files with notepad
and searching for string "c#" let me find out why this file is returned
by search... Is it really the problem or not ? (is seems to do the same
on word files too...)
Thanks for your help.
Regards,
Ben.
SQL FTS interprets C# as C#, but c# as c. So you need to capitalize the C in
your searches and content for this to work correctly.

|||Hello Hilary,
Thanks for your quick answer, but it seems that the problem still
remains : I was wondering if it has something to do with the full text
index in database, as I configured it to case insensitive.
Do I have to put it back to case sensitive to make it work ?
Do I have to change noise words files (I've already removed "C" letter
from neutral and english files) ?.

|||I tried to do a test for myself on this :
I created a new table, with full text index in case sensitive mode,
adding documents to it.
I still get files not containing C# values (all types of documents).
I even tried to use CONTAINSTABLE and FREETEXTTABLE, but problem is the
same...
Any ideas ?

|||I take it you are Swiss and using the German or French (or Italian) word
breakers. In these languages c# and C# are indexed as c and C# - a search on
c# or C# will match with c and c# (lower and upper case). English
unfortunately is the exception here. c# is indexed as c, and C# is indexed
as C#, the search is done on C# which will match with C# and a search on c#
will match with c.

|||Hello,
I need to implement full text search with in PDF and Text files along with tables in sql server 2000 , I think you have done some simimlar things ,
Can you give me detail s on how i can achieve same .
Thanks for your help in advance

indexing suggestions
current table has about 500k records in it.
the fields in the table are:
member_num (varchar(12), not null)
first_name (varchar(20), null)
last_name (varchar(20), null)
ssn (varchar(50), null)
address1 (nvarchar(200), null)
address2 (nvarchar(200), null)
city (nvarchar(200), null)
state (nvarchar(200), null)
zip (nvarchar(100), null)
phone1 (nvarchar(50), null)
all of the fields are searchable through an asp.net webform.
my first stab at this consisted of creating a clustered index on member_num and then creating a separate index for each of the remaining fields.I generally take a look at how the actual usage pans out. Do you expect the same amount of queries on address2 as last_name? Then there is the question of how often is last_name queried with or without first_name? Once you know how the searches usually shape up, then you can index smarter.|||If I know that first_name and last_name will always be used should I group them both into one index?|||Yes. I would bet that Last_Name will be more commonly used on its own, than first_name alone, so make Last_Name first in the index.
Almost suffered a zen moment in there. Some thing like last shall be first...Must need more coffee.|||I guess the better question would be : "How do I redesign my table"
State 200, zip 100, ssn 50?
Indexing seems to hang in the middle of a build
I am attempting to populate a full-text index based on a table of about 30
million rows. Previous to myself, this was done on smaller tables (ca 4
million rows) and took a tremendously long time - about 3-4 weeks!
Now, as we are building indexes based on much larger tables, it's worsened.
One index in particular has been building for quite a while since the start
of a full population. The "item count" in the catalog properties doesn't
even move anymore, but Enterprise Manager indicates that its 'populating'.
My users are becoming antsy. Any ideas?
This is on a 4-processor box with 4 gb ram. Thanks in advance!!!!
Below is my "troubleshooting" info based on these instructions:
use <your_database_name_here>
go
SELECT @.@.language
SELECT @.@.version
sp_configure 'default full-text language'
EXEC sp_help_fulltext_catalogs
EXEC sp_help_fulltext_tables
EXEC sp_help_fulltext_columns
EXEC sp_help <your_FT-enable_table_name_here>

Xavier,
Thank you for providing the detailed info below as this helps in
understanding your environment!
First of all, you should monitor the server's Application Event log for any
"Microsoft Search" or MssCi source events, to indicate the true progress of
the Full Population for your 30 million row table. You can also use the
following Perfmon counters to monitor the FT Catalog build process:
Microsoft Gatherer: Documents Filtered
The number of documents (rows) that have been filtered and the number that
have been indexed. Corresponds to the total number of documents (rows)
filtered in the system since startup.
Microsoft Gatherer: Filter Process Created
The total number of times a filter process was created or restarted. Having
too many filter processes created indicates that filtering is having trouble
with the data in the documents.
Microsoft Gatherer: Performance Level
The performance level varies from 1 to 5 as set by system stored procedure
sp_fulltext_service resource_usage (1=background, 3=default, 5=dedicated).
Indicates the amount of system resources that the Gatherer service is
permitted to use.
Microsoft Gatherer: Reason to back off
Shows a code that describes why the gathering service stopped the
population.
0 - Up and running
1 - High I/O rate
4 - Back off on user activity (by default this is disabled in server
install)
5 - Battery low (currently, if running on battery, not on AC power)
6 - Memory low (less than 5 MB left in paging file)
Microsoft Gatherer: System IO traffic rate
Shows the I/O rate that is used to determine whether to reduce crawl
processing. See physical disk counters for more detailed I/O diagnostic
information. System I/O (disk) traffic rate in KBs detected by back off
logic.
Microsoft Gatherer Projects: Crawl in Progress Flag
Contains 0 or 1 and indicates whether a population (or crawl) is running:
0 = Population is running
1 = Population is not running for a specific instance of a full-text
catalog.
Microsoft Gatherer Projects: Current Crawl is Incremental
Contains 0 or 1 and indicates whether the population is incremental:
0 = Incremental crawl.
1 = Full crawl for a specific instance of a full-text catalog.
Microsoft Gatherer Projects: Gatherer Paused Flag
Contains 0 or 1 and indicates a paused population:
0 = Not paused.
1 = Paused for a specific instance of a full-text catalog. If a full-text
catalog is paused, stop and then re-start the Microsoft Search service.
Microsoft Gatherer Projects: URLs in History
Shows the total number of URLs (rows) known to full-text indexing for a
specific instance of a full-text catalog.
Microsoft Gatherer Projects: Waiting Documents
Shows the number of documents (rows) waiting to be populated. This number
increases at the start of a crawl as new rows are identified, and then
decreases as the population progresses for a specific instance of a
full-text catalog.
Microsoft Search Indexer Catalogs: Merge Progress

Finally, have you considered upgrading or testing your database with SQL
Server 2005? As many performance improvements have been made relative to
Full Text Search and Full Text Indexing performcance. I've worked with other
customers with very large tables to be FT Indexed, who have successfully
joined the Microsoft's Yukon TAP (supported, early adopters program) for FTS
issues. I you want you can contact me off-line at jt-kane at comcast dot net
in regards to this program.
Thanks,
John
